NEW VIDEOS EVERY TUESDAY from your favourite tour guides in MADEIRA!
How was life like back then in PORTO DA CRUZ? (Madeira)
The parish of Porto da Cruz was created on 26 September 1577. The origin of the community's name came from the fact that the original discoverer affixed a steel cross at the port, in order to better identify the location to ocean travelers.
Cultivation and harvesting of sugarcane occupied the activities of early settlers. The aguardente factory, completed after 1858, was part of this industry, converting the grapes and juice into a local spirit, uniquely cultivating the American caste of grape in this territory.
Due to the diseases that devastated much of the European grape production in Madeira in the 19th century, American grape varieties such as Isabel, which are more resistant to diseases, were introduced in the mid-19th century as rootstock. This made the production of European grape varieties less susceptible to diseases.
However, due to the high resistance and productivity of these American varieties, they began to be produced on their own (without being grafted), leading to the production of dry wine. This wine quickly gained market popularity among the population, mainly due to its lower commercial value.

7 FACTS about Câmara de Lobos - The Fishing Village of Madeira

The location of the modern town is believed to be the original landing point for the Portuguese discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco, who is credited with the discovery of the Madeira Islands. When the explorer disembarked in this area, he observed a narrow rocky peninsula that extended into the ocean, and another nearby that formed an amphitheatre-like harbour that could shelter ships from Atlantic...

5 historical FACTS about MACHICO - The first landing of Madeira
Переглядів 3,9 тис.3 місяці тому
In July 1419, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão "das ilhas" landed on the beautiful beach of Machico. Thus began the glorious epic of Portuguese discoveries. Here, the first mass in Madeira was celebrated by Franciscan priests on the day of the Visitation of Saint Isabel (July 2), who accompanied the expedition as a thanksgiving and rejoicing for the discovery. Many hypotheses have been raised a...

I wish you can come to Trinidad to see our Portuguese traditions. Great video as usual!
Oh wow!! Four years on, no one will probably notice this comment but... So much fun to see Jeff, Lisa (from Free Walking Tours Funchal) and the folks so many years ago. We did a tours with Lisa last year (September 2023) and her tour was great!! I can't imagine there's any poncha that isn't "the greatest in the world" to use Jeff's phrase. I bet what Jeff came up with that day was delish! So fun to look back on these videos. And even more wonderful to know that you all continue your work to promote many of the lovely sites and experiences Madeira has to offer, and to help folks recognize how prescious - and sometimes fragile - all this can be. Thank you all for your work!
So nice to hear SA accent
Due over in 9 days time. 2 tours booked with you guys.
Could make a video that describes the current life for locals on Madeira island ? Their common difficulties cost of living housing market prices. As more i try to know and understand Madeira the more it looks like wonderful place to live but it is a nice place when you have money but for local it is probably becoming very difficult due to so much foreigners coming the live on the island.
Hi Dimitri, I think that is a topic that perhaps would generate too much unpopular opinion. I am a positive guy and I don’t want to be looking for negative things. I prefer to celebrate than to complain. Life is getting more expensive everywhere, I’m sure where you live house prices have gone up yes? Everywhere is getting expensive my friend, the only difference is that now we have opportunity, years ago my family left Madeira because there was not enough money or food. Now you have tourism and there is work and new opportunities, I prefer to see the opportunities. There are many great videos coming to this channel, but this kind of topic I think I am staying away from my friend I’m sorry, I hope you stick around 🙏 have a great weekend 🤠
Interesting set up they have there. Also, there is no methenol in a sugar wash (there's no pectin) so the distiller's assumption that "you can go blind" is totally wrong. He also believes that methenol is from copper, which makes no sense at all.
Maybe you should make a visit and chat with him ;) I’m not a rum producer myself so I cannot comment… have a great weekend bud 🤠
Book an excursion!!! It's a mountain island, no space for big parkings and for every tourist and their car. Book an excursion. Did you see the big bus? Designated parking. Plus the guides will let you know lots of little extra info. Seriously, with so many tourists in these last few years, the better option is to join a group. Some paths are less sought after, and for those you can go solo. But do not stray from the path. And inform someone of where you will be.
Yes I agree 👍 very good points, unfortunately everybody goes to the same places when there are so many other great places and yes great guides in the industry to help coordinate everybody 💪 100% have a great weekend my friend 🤠
Great episode. Last minute booking so your video helped a lot!
Im glad :)) hope you booked a tour as well ;)) enjoy your vacation!!
You left out Santa Cruz which has a stunning promenade, pools and pebble beach to swim at. Much better than Porto Novo. Santa Cruz is always forgotten and it is such a quaint village with a beautiful promenade and good eating places.
Yes Manuela you know I totally forgot about Santa Cruz, big mistake, the pizza cafe is also very good and a nice place to with family 👍 bom fim de semana!! 🤠
Thanks for cobbling together this,Jeff. Some really interesting places, though that water under the airport looks scary. Never used the cable car but I’ve heard Garajau is great for diving (maybe not beach). Your trip to Canical brings up the point that, though it is one of the island’s most important towns, there are very few videos about it on UA-cam. Thanks again and see you soon.
See you soon buddy!! And yes Garajau is great for diving and swimming as well, but we covered this somewhere, wanted to do all new places this time ;)) have a great weekend !! 🤠
Preservatives😂
😂😂😂
Thanks Jeff & André ☺ It's actually interesting to see places off the beaten track not covered by other UA-camrs. Much love to Fábio as it was great to see him again! Hope you're having a swell time in NY & enjoy the rest of the week my friend 🤗
Thanx Rue!! Have a great weekend buddy 🤠 big hug
Na Madeira não tem uma praia com areia do deserto do Saara ?
There's two, Machico & Calheta & I visit both in my Madeira 2022 part 1 vlog & the more recent cable car vlog 😊 Sorry for hijacking your comment Jeff! 🤣
Pois tem! Mas não era a tema deste vídeo, bom fim de semana!!
I'm right now at Machico and tbh after good hike during the morning hours i enjoy local sand beach✌🏽 btw Jeff thank you for all your tips my stay is much easier because of you.......... Btw local Poncha is the best
Machico is a beautiful place to swim, very safe beach
Glad you enjoyed it and happy to help :)) have a great weekend!! 🤠
I'm glad you clarified why the water seems to be cleaner in the morning, I'm sure many of us were thinking of something else lol. Keep up the good work my favourite tour guide of Madeira 😎
Just what I’ve noticed eheh have a great weekend and thank you 🙏🤠
😎
🤩
A waterfall on a road looks cool but that road will collapse down the cliff in no time.
Ahah yeah all the traffic these days doesn’t help 😂
I was born in Monte in 1969. My parents left for the UK and I followed them in 1974. I grew up in London ! Madeira is beautiful, if you have never been, it should be on your list to visit before you die !
Wow a new country with only 5 years old 😳 hope to see you back in Madeira soon Neo! Bom fim de semana
Too much talk 😢
Too much Tv 😂
Cineastas de fim de semana
Saturated. Sad to see
Indeed, was there yesterday at 11am and nowhere to park 🥺
Thank you so very much for sharing the best sunrise and sunset spots in summer on the island. Many of your channel content is super informative and helpful.
Great to have you on Tour Vaish!! Enjoy Madeira 🤠
What are the temp ranges like in winter in low elevations? Does the water get much colder or can you still swim?
Water temperatures in low elevations? 18 degrees Celsius maybe … depends where you are from but some people still swim in the winter
Thanks Jeff & André ☺ Some extremely useful tips there! I hope your both having a fabulous time in the US! Did you find out in the end what that small fort was about?
We didn’t no, had to get back to work 😂
That Ribeira Brava beach - with its pool, protective lagoon and proximity to the town - is seriously underrated. One of our hidden favorites. As far as sunsets, it’s hard to beat Madalena do Mar. 😂We are getting closer and closer to our move, Jeff - and hopefully I’ll remember to bring you a New York Mets cap to replace that (yuck) Phillies hat. Can’t wait! 😊😊😊
Ahah a baseball cap is always welcome ;)) See you guys soon!! 🤠
Wow awesome 😮😮
Glad you enjoyed it 🤠
Your content just keeps getting better 🙌🏽
Thanx Pedro!! Hope to see you soon buddy
Fabio is a great edition Jeff 👏 Can't wait to see you in December. Quick question - does Madeira have mosquitoes and midges at any time during the year? 🦟
Thanx bud! Yeah sometimes in the summer but not a whole lot, I wouldn’t worry about it
Of all the videos regarding Madeira Island, this is my first video where the subject is about Sao Roque… the place where I was born and baptized but I have little recollection of this place. Thank you for sharing this.
You’re welcome Matt :)) we love Sao Roque 🤠
Thanks Sr Manny! Loved the story. Keep up the good work Jeff! 🇵🇹🇿🇦
A beautiful story indeed, thank you Antonio 🙏🤠
Looking forward to experiencing this tour again with you and the team! The best tour guide in Madeira 🇵🇹
Can’t wait to have you back Carlos! 🤠
What an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your story!
🙏🙏🙏
We are staying in Camara de Lobos during the months of July and August so will definately book some stuff with you guys. Fabio is interesting as he is a native Madeiran with a New York accent?
Is that a New York accent? 😂 Fábio is a gem and yea you won’t regret taking a few tours with us :)) See you soon Michael! 🤠
That’s was amazing loved the food video , Fabio is a natural definitely more gastronomy videos with Fabio, my husband says he sees him going all over Portugal rating restaurants for your channel very well done 🥰👍👍🇨🇦🇵🇹
Who knows hey Liz :)) we have high hopes for Fabio eheh see you soon soon!! 🤠😘
Nice introducing Fabio and his hometown😎 .You can not get more locals than you two ✌️🕺🏻🕺🏻
Ahah thank you 🙏 more good stuff to come ;) have a great weekend my friend 🤠
Hi Jeff! Thank you for so much information! We spent 10 fantastic days in Madeira, your videos helped a lot and you gave us great tips that made our work on the island easier!
You’re welcome buddy :)) All the best 🤠
Thanks Jeff & Fabio ☺ Fabio did a brilliant job once again presenting as he did in my vlog, & I totally rate the food at Churrascaria São Roque from when I visited in April 2022! Who was he calling ugly?! Lol! 🤣 Hmm, I recognise that wine cellar! 🤫 You had some great points Jeff, especially when it came to a local's opinion rather than a fly by night "influencer"! Tut tut to Margarita for not knowing "Let's hit the road", but at least she knows now! André forgot to mention it I guess in her basic training! Have an amazing week my friend 🤗
Thanx Rue!! Yeah Fabio’s a natural hey ;) can’t wait to have you back here buddy, have a great weekend !! 🤠

Thank you Fabs :)) Yeah times flies hey, feels like just yesterday we were starting this whole adventure :)) Glad you still around !! Have a great weekend !! 🤠
Great video, thank you for what you are doing 😊
Thank you very much 🙏🤠
My first time in Maderia was last month. All the popular spots we had researched were very crowded, beautiful but crowded. I love the videos you post, no crowds. Can't wait to go back. We did find some great "local" restaurants with fantastic food. We also met some fantastic people and they gave us great recommendations.
Glad you enjoyed it George! Next time, you need to take a tour with us so you can see what travelling through Madeira without crowds feels like ;)) All the best buddy have a great weekend 🤠
Good timing! 1st to 👍👍👍👍👍
ahah well done Manuel !! 👏👏👏
Hi Jeff, does this hike begin or end at the Bica da Cana viewpoint, or is that a different location?
Hey Lynn, there’s several start points and one of them is indeed at Bica da Cana
@@Hittheroadmadeira Thank you, Jeff!
Bravo, very interesting. Madeira is incredibly interesting, I went in 2023 and I will come again in December for Christmas.
Thank you Angela :)) Madeira in December is beautiful you’ll love it!! 🤠

Grateful for Manny’s positive story and to Hit the Road Madeira for bringing it to us.
Thank you Howard, and yes Manny is an inspiration 🙏
So excited to book with Lisa. I did find Lise on instagram before seeing this video (ai🤪) but I do not see her details below.
You can look up Free Walking Tours Funchal, she’s the one and only, the original. If you have trouble, just email us and I’ll make sure to get you in contact
I just want to show my support to what many already wrote. Very special video, very inspiring. Madeira's history - and present - is full of examples of globalization, emmigration, immigration. Always nice to hear first hand experiences! Keep on the good work!
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏 There’s much more to come ;)) Have a great weekend my friend 🤠
Incredible story. Thanks for making this video.
